ABSTRACT

Presented in this paper are results of some numerical simulations of multi-cell natural convection air flows in a closed vertical slot. Under non-Boussinesq conditions, these results indicate a significantly higher critical Grashof number than the one for Boussinesq flows, and show that the multi-cell flow is unsteady. These findings are consistent with the linear and nonlinear stability analysis by Suslov, and contradictory to Chenoweth's finding that under non-Boussinesq conditions, the critical Grashof number Grc is much lower than that of Boussinesq flow and the instability may still result in steady multi-cell flow. This contradiction points out that Chenoweth's findings may not be correct, although further investigations, both theoretical and numerical, and physical validations are necessary to make a final conclusion.
