ABSTRACT

A numerical study on a new method using online laser to cure thermoset composites in filament winding is conducted. In this method, a laser illuminates a segment of the tow as it is being wound onto the mandrel. Considering the tow as a straight cylinder, a three-dimensional mathematical model is formulated and solved numerically. In this model, laser is absorbed completely at the surface of the tow. The results show an improved temperature history to that predicted by previous models with uniform laser absorption.
