ABSTRACT

A model is presented to account for the interaction among combustion, radiation and turbulence in nonpremixed turbulent flames with gas-phase radiation, based on the stretched laminar flamelet (slf) approach. In particular, the effect of heat transfer on combustion is accounted for by introducing the enthalpy defect as an additional fundamental state quantity. The radiative transfer equation (RTE) is solved via the discrete-transfer method, and the effect of fluctuations is accounted for by a suitable averaging procedure, which envisages probability density functions evaluated both at the local level, and along the rays used for integrating the RTE. A test case is discussed, and the effect of fluctuations along a typical ray is quantified. The turbulent combustion regime is also ascertained, by an appropriate extension of Peters' phase-diagram.
