ABSTRACT

The focus of this review is application of modern ful field experimental techniques based on the digital image analysis in verifying and validating numerical solutions of thermally driven flows. Digital Particle Image Velocimetry and Thermometry, the new experimental methods based on a computational analysis of the colour and displacement of liquid crystal tracers, was used to obtain quantitative 2-D temperature and velocity fields information. The paths of the individual tracers obtained using 3-D digital particle tracking helped to understand and verify the flow structure. Laminar natural convection of liquids in small cube-shaped cavities, with and without phase change was studied experimentally and compared with numerical predictions. Implications arising from simplifications present in the numerical models are discussed.
