ABSTRACT

Investigation of the Lagrangian dynamics of passive scalar gradient under the action of Burgers' vortex is performed from a numerical and analytical point of view. Following the Garcia & Gonzalez approach [9], scalar gradient alignment can be determined analytically along Lagrangian trajectories. In the case of Burgers' vortex, the equilibrium alignment is the bisector of the eigenvectors of the rate-of-strain tensor lying in the plane normal to vorticity. The numerical simulation confirms this behaviour of the scalar gradient alignement and provides further insight into the evolution of scalar gradient dynamics.
