ABSTRACT

Traveling microburst was experimentally simulated by salt water dropped in a water tunnel. The downdraft of the microburst was observed to be inclined not by the mother cloud but by the horizontal wind. The resultant flow patterns and velocity profiles of the outflow were quite similar to those of the actual microburst observed by Doppler radars. The downdraft velocity normalized by a characteristic velocity of microburst increased with its density, whereas the maximum velocity of the outflow was almost constant. The normalized radius and height of the outflow also increased with the density.
