ABSTRACT

An experimental study was performed on a full scale natural draft wet cooling tower at Mount Piper Power Station in NSW Australia. Anemometers and thermocouples were installed by dividing the surface above the drift eliminator into four regions. The results suggest that the cooling water and air temperatures, inside the tower and the velocity of the air inside the tower vary as a function of the power generation by the turbine. The air velocity inside the tower was found to be comparatively higher in zones closer to the centre of the tower. An increase in the air velocity inside the tower from 1.8 to 2.3 ms−1 increased the tower efficiency by 10%. That increase in air velocity was achieved when wind speed increased from 0 to 5 ms−1.
