ABSTRACT

A numerical study of the laminar swirling flow between a cylinder and a cone is presented in the case where the fluid is tangentially introduced at the system base. Two flow configurations are defined: in the first one the channel is convergent and in the second one the channel is divergent. The resolution of the momentum, continuity and concentration equations is achieved by the use of an implicit finite difference scheme. The calculations, which concern the three components of the velocity flow-field, the pressure and the profile of concentration, allow the comparison of the swirl properties and the coefficient of mass transfer in the two studied configurations. It has been found that the increase of the swirl in the convergent channel system from the inlet to the outlet enhances the mass transfer and makes this system a good candidate for a mixing device.
