ABSTRACT

A review work concerning the fundamental aspects of analytical or numerical methods applied to freezing and melting heat-transfer problems has been performed. An attempt is first made to demonstrate the original features of the method, which have been developed by previous investigators up to the present, by a common heat-conduction problem with change of phase and to give an outline of their modifications to more complicated systems, respectively. Some of the differences between the mathematical models and the actually observed water-freezing or ice-melting phenomena are next discussed in detail. An additional attention is focused on the freezing or melting problem with respect to phase change medium which has recently attracted a great deal of interest because of its relevance to phase-change thermal energy storage systems.
