Pamela M. Norris Sushil Shrinivasan ABSTRACT This chapter follows a chapter in the sixth volume of this book series focused on fascinating ultra-porous materials referred to as aerogels. That chapter focused on applications in thermal insulation and catalysis. In this chapter, the production process for these sol-gel-derived materials is presented, and the characterization techniques are reviewed. In recent years much progress has been made in commercialization of aerogel materials and a summary of many potential applications, ranging from acoustic impedance matching layers to biosensors, is provided. 385-408 pages |
