ABSTRACT

The serial publication, Annual Review of Heat Transfer, is designed to provide expository, but penetrating, state-of-the-art reviews of important new developments in the general field of heat transfer. These special characteristics were clearly exhibited in the previous volume (Volume 3), which covered such topics as biological freezing, binary vapor condensation, film condensation interface, high-Tc superconductors, multiphase transport in porous media, convection in packed beds and granular flow, microscales of turbulence, and scaling and asymptotic analysis in convection. Many of the contributing authors are already leaders in these emerging fields.
The present volume again contains eight chapters of new, challenging topics including chaos, fractal analysis, thermal shock in solids, thermal processing of materials, species-controlled condensation, heterogeneous propellant combustion, mixing of vaporizing droplet sprays, and fouling heat transfer. Again, the newness of these topics necessitated the choice of up and coming researchers, whose talents are vividly demonstrated in their personal backgrounds. All the participating authors deserve praise for their contributions.
The editor expresses his thanks to the heat transfer community for its continuing support and cooperation. Any suggestions and input from members of the scholarly community will be greatly appreciated.
