ABSTRACT

The ability of fractal geometry to quantify the disorder and chaos in structures and shapes offers promising prospects of understanding the physical mechanisms of disordered thermal phenomena. A fundamental analytical approach of modeling disorder can be formulated based on these physical insights. This chapter reviews the relevant literature on fractals and explores the possibilities of applying this simple and powerful technique to several areas in thermal sciences. The areas of surface thermophysics, combustion, transport phenomena in porous media, and thermal problems in biology are discussed in this study.
