ABSTRACT

Micro- and nanoscale photonics devices have been under rapid development due to the advancement of thin film growth technology and the increasing understanding of micro-and nanoscale device properties. The fast expanding photonics technology has raised many challenging heat transfer questions. This chapter reviews critical thermal issues in micro- and nanoscale photonic devices. A unified picture of heat transfer by photons, electrons, and phonons is outlined based on their similarities. Current understanding of the heat generation and transfer processes in technologically important photonic devices is summarized. The topics cover superlattices, quantum wells, semiconductor lasers, optical data storage, photonic switching, and logic devices.
