ABSTRACT

There are always problems in determining the smoke layer interface height in a long tunnel while carrying out hot smoke tests in assessing smoke management systems with small fires. An experimental technique using infrared is proposed to track the smoke layer interface positions in this paper.
Field measurements were carried out in a tunnel of length 96 m with diesel pool fires up to 1.5 MW. The results on tracking the smoke layer interface front were compared with the measurements by thermocouples and visual observations. This technique is demonstrated to be useful for tracking the smoke layer interface. The proposed method is suitable for hot smoke tests in evaluating smoke management systems in long tunnels with small fires.
