ABSTRACT

In laser printers or copy machines, isothermal heating as well as rapid response of drum or heat roll is desired. Concentric annular heat pipe, which is called Roll Heat Pipe (RHP) in this paper, can be a good candidate for this purpose. In RHP, the evaporator and condenser are separated in the radial direction and the energy is moved radially. The major concern is the transient thermal response as well as isothermal characteristics of the heat pipe outer surface.
In this research work, experimental investigation as well as theoretical study is done to analyze the performance characteristics of RHP. In addition, three types of RHP with different heat transfer cross-sectional shape and size are tested and analyzed. Furthermore, the effects of rotation on the performance of RHP are investigated. Also, dryout condition due to heat input and rotational speed, is taking into account in this study and the results are reported.
The results of this research work shows that the level of temperature uniformity on the outer surface of RHP is very high compared with heat roll, which is currently used in the fusing unit of copy machines. Also, fast thermal response of RHP is another important result of present work.
